SIOUX FALLS SWEET 16 PHOTO SESSION. SEE HOW HARPER CELEBRATED WITH GOLDEN HOUR PHOTOS DOWNTOWN + WHY MILESTONE SESSIONS ARE WORTH IT.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating
Sixteen. I still can’t quite believe we’re here already. This milestone felt different than the others—maybe because Harper had her own vision for what she wanted this session to look like, and I got to step back and watch her bring it to life. There’s something so meaningful about photographing your own child at such a big age. It’s a reminder that these years go quickly, and that’s exactly why milestone photography matters.
Her Style, Her Choices
For her sweet 16 session, Harper picked out everything on her own—from the dress and shoes, to the flowers, to the jewelry. Watching her pull it all together felt like seeing her personality shine in a new way. The style she chose was elegant and timeless, but still completely her. That’s what I love most about milestone sessions: they let kids and teens show up as their authentic selves. These photos aren’t just for us as parents to treasure—they’re for them, too.
Golden Hour Magic
We couldn’t have asked for better light. Golden sunlight blanketed everything, illuminating the city in the warmest, softest glow. It lingered through her entire session, wrapping downtown Sioux Falls in magic and making every step feel like it was meant to be savored. Golden hour has a way of slowing time down, and this evening was the perfect example of that.
Exploring New Backdrops
We wandered through downtown Sioux Falls looking for new settings to match her more formal style, and I think we found some perfect ones. From the texture of brick walls, to little floral details softening the scene, to the way light bounced between buildings—it all came together in the most beautiful way. Photographing in the city always brings new inspiration, and this sweet 16 session was no exception.
Why Milestones Matter
As her mom, this one hit me differently. Sixteen years ago, milestone photography looked very different for me. Back then, a department store studio session felt like such a luxury—one that wasn’t always in reach. With the last bit of extra cash I had, I bought my first Canon DSLR so I could take photos of Harper whenever I wanted. That little camera was the start of everything for me. Thousands of photos later, Harper is still my muse. This sweet 16 reminded me why I do what I do: to help families hold onto these fleeting seasons before they slip away.
Celebrate the “Big” Birthdays
Milestone sessions are some of my absolute favorites because they’re so much more than just pictures for a yearbook or snapshots on a phone. They’re a celebration of who your child is in this exact season of life. Whether it’s a baby turning one, a toddler taking those first wobbly steps, a school-age kid hitting double digits, or a teen stepping into a new chapter—these moments deserve to be remembered with intention.
