This little guy wasn’t just another baby I was meeting for the first time. I’ve known his family for years.

I first met his dad when he was just a young teenager — back when I photographed his family. A few years later, I took his senior photos. Fast-forward again and I was behind the camera on his wedding day, capturing him marry the love of his life. And now, I had the incredible honor of photographing their first baby boy.

If I’d listened to the advice so many photographers are given — to “niche down,” to specialize in just one type of session — I might’ve missed moments like this. I wouldn’t have been there to capture all these milestones, to see a family’s story unfold from one generation to the next. And honestly, that’s what I love most about what I do.

WHY I DON’T NICHE DOWN

I understand why niching can make sense — it helps photographers find focus and consistency. But for me, photography has always been about connection. Each session type tells a different chapter of someone’s story:

• Family portraits capture what life looks like right now — the laughter, the chaos, the love.

• Weddings celebrate the start of a new family.

• Newborn sessions capture that fleeting window when everything feels brand new and impossibly small.

Being invited into each of those chapters is the greatest honor. Watching families grow and being trusted again and again — it’s what fills me up and keeps me passionate about this work.
